Atari 2600 UNOCART+

The UNOCART+ 2600 cartridge is a variation of the Unocart multicart solution, crafted for the Atari 2600+.

The development of the UNOCART+ 2600 cartridge is primarily focused on the 2600+ console, and it also enables users to enjoy classic 2600 games on the new Atari 7800+ console.

Limitations:

  • Support for the original Atari 2600 console is currently limited and may be withdrawn in the future to accommodate additional 2600+ functionalities.

  • The file name length must be kept concise, not exceeding 255 characters.

  • The folder name length should also be brief, with a maximum of 255 characters.

  • The full path (File Name + Folders) must not exceed 255 characters.

  • The number of files within a folder should not exceed 127.

  • The OLED screen can display only 18 characters; file names longer than 18 characters will scroll once before being truncated.

  • Not all cartridge types can be emulated, although the majority of formats will function correctly.

  • Do not insert or remove the microSD card while the console is powered on, as this could corrupt the microSD card.

This cartridge is made by fans for fans. Due to the small production quantities, some designs such as the 3D printed case are done using consumer tools. Do not expect mass market quality.
Development is done on the Atari 2600+ and 7800+.

Using the UNOCART+ 2600  or 7800+

  1. On a computer, format a microSD card in FAT32.

  2. Copy your ROM to the microSD card. You may create folders; however, keep in mind that you will be navigating the microSD card using a small OLED display. Ensure that the ROM names are succinct and the folder hierarchy is simple.

  3. Insert the microSD card into the UNOCART+ cartridge.

  4. Insert the UNOCART+ cartridge into the Atari 2600+ console (or the 7800+).

  5. Start the Atari 2600+ console (or the 7800+).

  6. Upon first use, no game will load by default. Use the left/right buttons and press to navigate your microSD and select a game.

  7. Once a game is selected, the UNOCART+ cartridge will initiate the ROM emulation, and the console should detect the game a few seconds later.

  8. During gameplay, press the UNOCART+ cartridge button to halt the emulation and select a new game.

  9. On subsequent uses, the UNOCART+ cartridge will emulate the last played game. You can then press the button to select a new game.

Using the UNOCART+ on an Original Atari 2600 Console

This functionality is limited and may be withdrawn to make way for future 2600+ support.

  4. Insert the UNOCART+ cartridge into the Atari 2600.

  5. Start the Atari 2600 console.

  6. The TV will display coloured lines; this is normal.

  7. Upon first use, no game will load by default. Use the left/right buttons and press to navigate your microSD and select a game.

  8. Restart your 2600 console. Coloured lines will be displayed for a few seconds, after which the selected game should commence.

  9. During gameplay, press the UNOCART+ cartridge button to halt the emulation and select a new game. During this period, the Atari 2600 console may cease gameplay and display strange artefacts or produce unusual noises. This is normal; similar behaviour occurs when any cartridge is removed during play.

  10. On subsequent uses, the UNOCART+ cartridge will emulate the last played game. You can then press the button to select a new game.

Firmware Update

Numerous components are at play: Various Atari consoles, various firmware for these consoles, various types of ROM formats and a vast library of games from the 1980s, alongside new games being developed today.

Not everything can be tested, and the UNOCART+ cartridge firmware will undergo updates as time pass.

Older UNOCART+ firmware can be updated with new firmware. Here is how you can do it:

  1. Download the latest firmware.

  2. Extract the BIL file and rename it to "updateunoplus.bin".

  3. Copy "updateunoplus.bin" into the microSD card at the root folder.

  4. Insert the microSD into the UNOCART+ cartridge.

  5. Insert the UNOCART+ cartridge into the Atari console.

  6. Hold the button to the right and start the console.

  7. The firmware update will commence; you may release the button at this step.

  8. Once the firmware update is complete, switch off the console.

  9. You can now utilize the UNOCART+ cartridge to emulate ROMs once again.

Questions / Answers:

Q: Can I use this UNOCART+ 2600 cartridge on an original Atari 2600?
A: Support for the original console is limited. 2K and 4K ROMs should function properly. Development is primarily focused on the 2600+ and 7200+ consoles.

Q: Why can you not use a menu on the TV like the other multicarts for the 2600 ?
A: The other multicarts utilize a special ROM running on the Atari 2600 to display a menu and select games. This solution is not feasible with the 2600+ and 7800+.

Q: Can I emulate 7800 games?
A: No, only 2600 games can be emulated.

Q: Can the UNOCART+ be purchased with a ready-to-play microSD full of games?
A: No, you must source your own microSD card and ROMs. Any microSD card should suffice; there is no need for a large capacity one. 16GB is more than adequate. Downloading ROMs from the internet is your responsibility.

Q: A ROM is emulated, but the 2600+ console does not recognize it or fails to launch it.
A: The Atari 2600+ and 7800+ cannot run all games, and the UNOCART+ may not support certain ROM formats. First, investigate and confirm that the game on the original cartridge functions on the 2600+. Also, ensure your UNOCART+ cartridge is using the latest firmware. If the game should work, use the contact form below to submit a request, specifying the game name, the firmware version of your console, and any details that may assist in debugging the issue.

Q: During the emulation, the OLED screen displays "Cartridge Type: X" with X being a number. What does it signify?
A: This number assists in identifying the type of ROM the game is utilizing. Please refer to the supported ROM table above.
